The Shadow The Dark Goddess And The Moon

As the Moon wanes toward the last dark moon period of 2009, I have been doing some brainstorming about what I hope to accomplish on this blog during the coming year, and I have been seriously thinking about incorporating some "inner child" and "shadow" work along with the phases of the Moon. I've done some of this work myself in the past and use it to work with my clients. The Shadow, a psychological term introduced by Carl Jung, is everything within us that is unconscious, repressed, and denied. We all have a Shadow, a dark side. It is an archetype, just as the dark goddess is an archetype. These goddesses represent the aspects of our nature that we may have been taught to repress. Our Shadow sides do their best work in in the dark of our unconscious. The more we avoid them, the more power we give them.

The goddesses who are associated with the Dark Moon are all associated with death and regeneration...not to be taken literally. Death can be a part of us that that no longer serves us, that excess unnecessary emotional baggage we need free ourselves of. The Dark Moon has long been associated with the Land of the Dead, the Underworld, the unconscious sphere of our psyches. And, as the mirror that reflects the light of the Sun, the Moon represents the Shadow side of the sun's light. It reflects the mystery and fear within our souls. The Dark Moon reminds us all of nature's cycles of death and rebirth. Each Dark Moon offers us a chance to be renewed, a chance to experience the unknowing, and the opportunity to gain wisdom from within. The Dark Moon opens the door to our pasts...and reaches far back into that which we may have hidden. And until we reach back into our past, explore, and deal with that which we have hidden, we will never reach our full potential.
