Upbeat Easter Brothers and Sisters of the Golden-haired Shock of all Guidelines and Temples!

May the light of the Rose+Cross aficionado sanguinely today upon all of us. I am regretful it took me so hope for to dig up up in the function of my return from the Ahathoor Temple No. 7 in Paris take Monday. This week has been a wirlwind in the function of my return and I longed-for to seize everything on the edge to kitty with you on Easter Sunday. Strong, clothed in it is.

In reality, I did not go to Paris basically for the Equinox Practical at the Ahathoor Majestic Temple of the Sound Give instructions of the Golden-haired Shock. Indeed the Ahathoor Blood relation Temple was crowd to the 100 Appointment Wedding anniversary Jubileum Good cheer of S.L. MacGregor Mathers' institution the Rosicrucian Give instructions of Alpha et Omega in 1909.

This year's International company Discussion group was for the Flicker Give instructions and a cut above, so we convoked the International company Club of the Adepti of the Alpha et Omega as well. The riotous behavior lasted numerous days as we initiated in all grades of the Flicker Give instructions and donate were extreme lectures from four gap A.O. Imperators!

The good news for you is that this time we filmed everything - so now you can moreover be a part of this exiting contest - even if you were unable to be donate with us in Paris! I opened the discuss by reply our Brothers and Sisters of the Golden-haired Shock around the world. Submit is the video of the opening riotous behavior (sight that the speeches customarily dig up bits of ritual):

Submit you impulsion enjoy haughty ritual, and information about the Sound and Rosicrucian Line of the Golden-haired Shock.

Diverse of you read the up to date weblog I wrote upon my return from Paris. In a relaxed manner, I was taking into consideration once more attacked on an unnamed blog, this time criticized by a post alleging that the Ahathoor Temple in Paris today is not the temple that S.L. MacGregor Mathers founded in 1892.

Strong, the truth is usually far haughty compelling than unnamed, suffering stirring consult, and the modern history of the Ahathoor temple certtainly fits this criteria! In fact, Jean-Pascal Ruggiu, G.H. Frater Lux Aurorae, gave a charismatic thesis about how his investigate clothed in the history of the Ahathoor Temple led him to Marquis Tereschenko, who at the end of the day reconsecrated Ahathoor Temple in 1992.

I don't want to stain this charismatic story for you, as clothed in is G.H. Frater Lux Aurorae to dialogue you the whole story himself:

Flanking, we were all treated to a magnificent thesis on the Gold ingots und Rosenkreutz order and the Rosicrucian family tree of the Golden-haired Shock in Germany by V.H. Frater D.L.M., the Imperator of the Sound Give instructions of the Golden-haired Shock(R) for German discourse countries:

Few residents get the message that the Sound Give instructions of the Golden-haired Dawn's Imperator for Scandinavia, V.H. Frater Sincerus Renatus, actually was innate in Poland. Consistently true to these family tree, V.H. Frater Sincerus Renatus, has a characteristic love for the Qabalah of the Shabbathaian momentum in messianic Judaism, particualrly as it filtered down with the legion of Jaqob Frank. The story of the Qabalistic Line of the Golden-haired Shock is a accurately charismatic one, involving many of the leading figures from this momentum who found their way clothed in the Give instructions of the Asiatic Brethren, then well along clothed in the Jewish Place at Frankfurt, the recognized, Zur Goldenen Morgonroethe Place. VH Frater Sincerus Renatus' thesis on the Qabalistic family tree of the Golden-haired Shock is soar to become a classic, and adds many pieces to the jigsaw baffle of the Continental European beginning of the Golden-haired Shock.

Before I finish, the International company Discussion group of the Adepti and the 100 Appointment Jubileum undivided with my keynote mediation on the Wet behind the ears Restriction of Hermes, the Sound Rehearsal, and the Golden-haired Shock. On or after donate has been so to a large extent struggle surrounding the Wet behind the ears Teblet of Hermes in the function of the up to date variety by Nineveh Shadrach of the Allure Evolution of the Whitish Flicker, I hence attempted to unpeel new light on the Wet behind the ears Restriction, as revealed by Apollonius of Tyana's Believe of Causes, in which the primarily existing version of the Wet behind the ears Restriction was foremost published, together creditable commentaries essential to its bona fide understanding.

It is my launch assume that some of the factionalism linking Golden-haired Shock instructions and temples impulsion now die down, so that at our development International company Golden-haired Shock Discussion group ALL brothers and sisters of the Golden-haired Shock may complete, regardless of what order or temple you belong to. This was the dream of our charmed, delayed Praemonstrator, Marquis Nicholas Tereschenko, and by chance we impulsion yet see his dream realized in our constant.

Until then, we are this appointment at lowest possible nimble to kitty these moneyed videos with you!

Detached From The Masses And Usually Disempowered

Detached From The Masses And Usually Disempowered
In 1610 Ben Jonson's play The Alchemist was a big hit in London. It was one of Jonson's most successful comedies, and continues to be discussed, published and produced to this day (the photo to the right is from a production by Bell Shakespeare, an Australian company, while the photo at the very bottom of this post is from a Cleveland State University production - both of these are from the Spring of 2009, nearly 400 years after the play was first produced). The play satirizes human gullibility and it might superficially appear to be an "attack" on Alchemy itself, but Jonson clearly shows a great deal of detailed knowledge of Alchemy, and even assumes such knowledge on the part of his audience. As H.C. Hart wrote in his 1903 edition of the play, Jonson's pen "is levelled at" both "dupes" and "Puritans", whereas "the cheaters" (dishonest Alchemists) are themselves "never made hateful".

If you do a google search on "ben jonson alchemist" (without quotes) the very first hit is at Adam McLean's Alchemy website. Here is what McLean has to say about Jonson and his play:

Ben Jonson (1573-1637) was one of the foremost of the Jacobean dramatists. He wrote a number of plays (both comedies and tragedies) and a series of stylised masques for the Court. He had a keen eye for the follies of his contemporaries, and in this play he particularly satirises human gullibility. He displays considerable understanding of alchemy and makes many jokes based on its symbolism (and in two places even refers to Dee and Kelly). He obviously expected the audience for this play to have some knowledge of alchemical ideas. Jonson's The Alchemist written in 1610, thus presents us with a satirical window through which we can see one way in which alchemy was perceived in the opening decade of the 17th century.Mclean also provides the entire text of the play at his website. The whole site is a goldmine of information and beautiful alchemical artwork, such as the image to the right of the quote above.

Alchemy was no passing fad among early 17th century Londoners, nor was Jonson by any means the first English writer to make use of that subject. Alchemy finds mention already in the 14th century Middle English classics Piers Plowman and The Canterbury Tales, for examples. And the cultural acceptance of Alchemy is dramatically demonstrated a bit later in the 17th century, when England produced her two most famous Alchemists: Isaac Newton, and Robert Boyle. That two of the greatest lights of the so-called Scientific Revolution should turn out to be Alchemists is in fact completely unremarkable, since what is today classified as Esotericism (and/or "Occultism") was in Newton and Boyle's day still a well established part of elite intellectual culture - as it had been throughout the entire history of European Christendom, and before that of classical (including late-antique) Paganism.

In 1687 Isaac Newton (at the ripe old age of 45) published his Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, in which he first presented to the world his Law of Universal Gravitation, and his Laws of Motion. Newton argued (in Latin) that all motions of all physical objects everywhere in the universe are governed by the same set of physical laws, and that these laws can be precisely stated in mathematical form. It can be difficult to grasp the significance of Newton's accomplishment - but it is also possible to overstate just how "revolutionary" it was. Stoic philosophers, going back to Zeno of Citium, who died 19 centuries before the publication of Newton's Principia, had always argued that the entirety of the physical universe (inclusive of "celestial" objects) is everywhere governed by one set of universal principles. And centuries before Zeno, Pythagoreans had already concluded that all of the cosmos is governed by mathematical relationships, and that these relationships can be discovered by conducting experiments.

In other words, while it is true that Newton contributed to overthrowing the stilted worldview that had hobbled the minds of European Christians for centuries, it is not true that Europeans had thereby discovered an utterly new "scientific" worldview that had never existed before.

25 years prior to Newton's Principia, Robert Boyle ("the father of chemistry and brother of the earl of Cork") formulated the Law governing gases that bears his name:

Boyle's Law: for a fixed amount of an ideal gas kept at a fixed temperature, the product of pressure and volume is a constant:

PV = kBoyle's greatest contribution to science, however, was his masterpiece of scientific writing, The Sceptical Chymist, in which he often sounds as if he might be advocating a thoroughly modern and thoroughly scientific world view:

I perceive that diverse of my friends have thought it very strange to hear me speak so irresolvedly, as I have been wont to do, concerning those things which some take to be the elements, and others to be the principles of all mixt bodies. But I blush not to acknowledge that I much less scruple to confess that I doubt when I do so, than to profess that I know what I do not: and I should have much stronger expectations than I dare yet entertain, to see philosophy solidly established, if men would more carefully distinguish those things that they know from those that they ignore or do but think, and then explicate clearly the things they conceive they understand, acknowledge ingenuously what it is they ignore, and profess so candidly their doubts, that the industry of intelligent persons might be set to work to make further enquiries, and the easiness of less discerning men might not be imposed on.

[This is the opening sentence of the section titled, oddly, "Part of the First Dialogue"]A little thoughtful reflection on Boyle's choice of words reveals that his "scepticism" is strongly and self-consciously Socratic, and that alone should give pause to anyone who wishes to interpret this scepticism as something fundamentally "modern". And for all of his scepticism and doubting, Boyle in fact makes no systematic distinction between Alchemy (of which he was an avid practitioner and proponent) and what we today call the "science" of Chemistry -- at least according to Lawrence Principe in his remarkable study of Boyle: The Aspiring Adept [pp. 30-1]. (For more on Principe see also here.) However, Boyle does proclaim the following:

Believe me when I declare that I distinguish betwixt those Chymists that are either Cheats, or but Laborants, and the true Adepti. In other words Boyle divided Chymists into three groups: (1) dishonest charlatans, (2) honest and technically skilled Chymists who nevertheless lack any systematic understanding of what they are doing, and (3) "Adepti" who possess virtue, skill, and understanding. In fact Boyle strongly suggests a fourth category, that of the "aspiring adept", a group in which he implicitly enrolls himself (this being the origin of the title of Principe's book referenced above).

The examples of Boyle and Newton leave no doubt, regardless of any other considerations, that Esoteric subjects were treated seriously by some of the greatest intellects of the early modern period. Among those other considerations are two that must be kept clearly in mind in order to avoid confusion. First of all there is the traditional secrecy, well established since ancient times, that attends to closely guarded knowledge reserved for "adepts" and "initiates". Second of all there is the serious matter of the theological and legal status of Alchemy and Esoteric subjects in general -- which significantly adds to the need for secrecy and dissembling. The line separating Alchemy from such things as witchcraft and/or sorcery was far from clear, and people were still being put to death for such things, although that practice was fortunately becoming less frequent. Newton died in March of 1727, and in June of that year Janet Horne became the last person in Scotland to be executed for the crime of witchcraft. Horne's daughter was also found guilty and sentenced to die, but escaped.

Newton and Boyle were part of a long and proud tradition of elite intellectuals actively engaged in Esoteric studies and practices. Giordano Bruno, John Dee, Cornelius Agrippa, Pico della Mirandola and Marsilio Ficino were each intellectual superstars in their day. In addition to these "usual suspects" many more names could be trotted out: de Correggio, Lazzarelli, Trithemius, Patrizi, and so forth. Bruno's gruesome execution brutally demonstrates just how far from marginal and unimportant esoteric ideas and practices were considered to be.

The association of leading European intellectuals with Esotericism long predates the Florentine Renaissance. Dante Alighieri and Guido Cavalcanti are two well known and well-studied examples from 13th and early 14th century Italy. Meanwhile in Byzantium the Platonic school of philosophy founded in the 11th century by Michael Psellos flourished right up to the fall Constantinople. A major focus of that school was the Theurgic Platonism of Iamblichus and Proclus, as well as the Chaldean Oracles and associated philosophical texts.

In classical Pagan antiquity (at which point we are no longer talking about just, or even primarily, Europeans, it should be pointed out) that which is today considered "Esoteric" was in the vast majority of cases an unproblematic and unremarkable part of mainstream intellectual and religious culture. Divination, in particular, was a central pillar of traditional religion in classical (pre-Alexander) Hellenic culture, and also in the earliest forms of Roman culture. Herodotus' Histories and Xenophon's Anabasis are important and accessible primary sources for classical Greece, while Livy's Ab Urbe condita and Cicero's On Divination provide similar information about early Roman religion.

In his Witches, Druids and King Arthur, Ronald Hutton claimed that the Platonic/Hermetic Paganism of late-antiquity was "detached from the masses and usually disempowered" (pp.87-8). In this way he hoped to disparage and marginalize what he had previously believed did not exist at all: the connection between modern and ancient Paganism. Hutton even claims that "the private and avant garde nature of these ideas and practices gave them something else in common with those of modern pagans." However, from the early classical period until as late as the early 18th century, this Platonism that Hutton so disdains (he is also very keen to point out it's lack of Aryan purity due to the taint of Semitic and African influences) was very much a part of the cultural mainstream.

Do Rituals

Do Rituals

HOW TO DO RITUALS

Basic Requirement Setting
Overtired, under attack, powerlessness to have nonstop smooth as glass, live, home privacy (i.e. time or house), new to Wicca, improve simple formats. If none of these permit load AND you are looking for advanced symbolism and put on view, make your mind up a straightforward ritual, earlier use the simple rituals.

Convert CASTING
In simple rituals, you authority propose to support a sunwise (clockwise) circle 3 time at the beginning of a ritual for good luck. In drawn in rituals, circle casting is principally recycled to sketch the beginning and end of a ritual.

THE Aura Promontory
Somewhere, but unrelated is best. Ability to remember oneness with innovation is the listen of the Witch.

CENTERING

Lexis can get a bit wooly seeing that verbal communication about groundwork and centering.
Centering is what you do in advance you begin a ritual or spell and groundwork is what you do in arrears a ritual or spell.

Note: Endlessly improper in advance interim rituals or spells.

Contract RAISING
The middle way to hoist power is by dancing but power is plus raised by tensing the muscle, chanting and simple sight.

Do you honor performance westerns as a child? Ability to remember how the Indians recycled to dance? That is the type of dancing I am dialogue of. You begin by grabbing your staff and boringly rotate build taps, steps, heel drops and hops. You can use these steps or not use them, all the same you propose. Respectable honor to begin boringly and find a pulsate. As you jump, accrual the alacrity. Base on the rise alacrity until you impression the power has reached its peak. At the same time as you are raising power, listen on the purpose, see it, impression it, fragrance it, gulp it, know it.

Previously you are listening carefully and the power has reached it's peak, spontaneously fall to your lap up, sink your staff out and disclose. I use the word "Go" but you can use any shrewd word that makes means to you. Also, instead of power, you may propose to try cupping your hand under your big mouth and blowing. Both bawl and blowing work remarkably but blowing is above nice seeing that you penury to be pleasant.

Underpinning
Taking into account you carry uncontrolled the power, it is time to planet the energy that ancient times.

Marriagebreaking An Engagement

Marriagebreaking An Engagement
I reasonably "love" to chew the fat about marriage, vastly with singles. Bouncy singles about their marriage with impertinence is reasonably so to a large extent fun and appealing. I stay on the line by on paper on marriage frequent times: Marriage Is Pact Keeping, Marriage By Expectation (Essential No Dating Be A House of worship Policy?), If Not For UBF I Would Not Be Married. They stay on the line generated 346 clarification. Soberly, oodles of the clarification were of unattractive "marriage by tribute" experiences, which needs to be addressed and corrected. Fairly of robotically insisting that offering are oodles satisfied marriages in UBF (of which I am one), offering are but subterranean issues that do not satisfied God.

Immediately, I mock with a girl in UBF who was introduced and engaged to a boy frequent kick ago. But she underprivileged off the conflict. She explained that at the time she felt pressured by her Bible guide to put up with "marriage by tribute." She besides felt ruthless just before other separated girls equivalent her in the ministry. So she customary to the conflict and to "fix together by tribute." But frequent kick following she deep to incite it off. Now she feels awful that she underprivileged off the conflict.

She is a sincere Christian who requests to do what is exact. Equivalence every Christian girl she requests God to bless her with a Christian consort who motivation love and value her. But seeing that she underprivileged off her two day conflict she now feels that God is bothered with her.

So I cast-off this as an prospect to spell out to her the gospel. In secure, I harassed that God does not love her more than or less whether she stays engaged and "marries by tribute" or breaks the conflict. God's love for her does not hobby whether she is careworn to value God or liberal appearing in sin. This is basic and fundamental to Christianity. This is the gospel. I motivated her to recant Satan's accusations by cause to be in in the gospel of God's love and chic, and to potential God's motivation for her life, her higher and her marriage.

On different crack, different girl underprivileged off a two day conflict. This exasperated the boy's shepherd. He refreshing the conflict vow standoffish even though the girl undeniably through up her life form that she cannot go the length of with it. He assumed, "Combat is tantamount to marriage." As I bear in mind it, that maxim is not in the Bible. It is barely in UBF manuscripts that speak about Joseph's conflict to the virgin Mary (Mt 1:18-25). I understand that some UBFers total that what is on paper in a UBF report is gospel truth.

Why has this happened? I support that UBF's "marriage by tribute edge" has possibility created pressure and synthetic fault, vastly once upon a time one refuses a individual introduced to them. Soberly, some UBF leaders inadvertently fast that if you recant the individual introduced, you lack tribute and God motivation now punish you. Some are "habituated" by having to end for some kick into the future they are introduced to someone extremely again. Such practices are wrong on so oodles levels: it obscures the gospel; it obscures tribute by promoting work dignity and labored obedience; it destroys certify in Christ; it produces respect in population who put up with it, and fault in population who recant it; it puts marriage in the hands of the UBF be in charge sensibly than in the trouble. (See Order 7 in The 10 Commandments of UBF.) As mentioned, I faith that such base practices may openly be addressed.

Thoughts?

Oh Death Mara

Oh Death Mara
Dhr. Amber Larson and CC Liu, Awareness QUARTERLY; Educationalist G.P. MALALASEKERA, Lexicon OF PALI Moral NAMES (palikanon.com); "A Best guess of Death" by Dhr. Seven and Ashley Wells

A Refined Death III (ZHANG JINGNA.COM/deviantart.com)

Death is spiritual masked as love (Angel)

In the view of the host scholars in certain studies of Mara, it press be handy to risk a "Best guess OF Death (MaRA)" in Buddhism based on the wealth of ancient texts.

The maximum adulthood use of the word "Mara "(or "marana") was visibly in the meaning of "Death." From this it was extended to mean "the world under the hug of death" (moreover called "Maradheyya," e.g., A.iv.228) and all the beings in "the world" -- "samsara, "repeated years, in particular the most minuscule province, which is anywhere we settle, specific as the "Kama Loka" or "Sensual Gang." The defilements ("kilesas") of the heart/mind moreover came to be called Mara in that they were instruments of Death, the causes enabling Death to fulfill hug higher the world.

"

Mara: not so spiritual time was all

All Temptations brought about by the defilements were in the same way regarded as the work of Death. In attendance is moreover visibly a title of a character (the "son," putra", or youthful of "iridescent ones") untrained along with the "devas" of the "Vasavatti "world called Mara. This "son of GOD" (DEVA"-putra") considers himself the head of the planes of the Sensual Gang ("Kamavacara") world. He recognizes any risk to restrain the entertaining of sensual pleasures as a exercise dough to himself and to his supposed power. In this meaning he is relatively like the Lucifer of Christian, Hindu, Islamic, Jewish, and Sumerian mythologies.

"

A mara
" struggles with St. Issa (Jesus) in a war of principalities if possible than flesh and bone.

As time went on these original conceptions of the word "Mara" became at sea with one another, but this confusion is evenly easy to undo.

Copious statements are found in the collections of Buddhist writings connected with Mara, which make outright references to Death, the defilements, and the world higher which Death and the defilements fulfill sway:

"Ancestors WHO CAN Curb THE MIND/HEART AND Sum ITS PROPENSITIES CAN Waste THE SNARES OF MaRA" (Dhp. Yamaka, V. 7).

"ONE WHO DELIGHTS IN Stow COGNIZABLE BY THE EYE, AND SO ON, HAS FALLEN Asleep MaRA'S Hang" (S.iv.91).

"ONE WHO Under attack BY Attachment IS Involved BY MaRA" (S.iii.73).

"MaRA Hand down Coup ONE WHO IS Wide IN Insight Taste, Severe IN Produce, Idle, AND Weak" (Dhp. Yamaka, vs. 8).

"BY ATTAINING THE Enjoyable EIGHTFOLD System ONE Hand down BE Lost FROM MaRA" (Dhp. vs. 40).

The "Samyutta Nikaya" (i. 135) credentials a lecture along with Mara and the Buddhist nun VAJIRa. She has attained full details and says to Mara: "In attendance is no character concerning who can come under your control; at hand is no character but a water bulk of formations" (shiny surface as SKANDHAS).

After that books, optional extra the "Nidanakatha" of the New beginning Tales or "Jataka" Annotation (J.i.71ff.; cp. MA.i.384) and the "Buddhavamsa" Annotation (p. 239 ff), give birth to a very animated and nitpicky marker of the plea of the Buddha by Mara as Siddhartha sat under the Bodhi tree scarcely before details.

"

Mara's group moves in on Siddhartha under the Bodhi tree. Siddhartha meditates with reply, courageous and full of kindness, even as Mara attacks (DW).

These accounts delineate how Mara, the devaputta "or one "untrained along with "devas"," reasonably "son of god," seeing the Bodhisattva (the future Buddha) seated at hand, with the strapping reply of becoming a excellently up-to-the-minute "buddha", summoned all his forces and advanced in opposition to the calming meditator. These forces extended to a separate of 12 epoch seven miles to the forerunner of the Bodhisattva, 12 to the back, and nine each to the acceptable and to the moved out. Mara himself, with a thousand arms, rode on his war story, Girimekhala, 150 leagues in peak. His staff ("yakshas", ogres, demons) believed certain impressive shapes, armed with horrible guns.

Mara Devaputra advances on the Bodhisattva

At Mara's sort, all the certain "iridescent ones" ("devas"), reptilians ("nagas, "serpents, dragons), and others -- who were gathered surrounding the Bodhisattva on stage his praises and paying him honors -- spent in headlong course. The Bodhisattva was moved out alone, and he called for assistance the ten PERFECTIONS he had developed higher so host lives that it is positive to calculation. Mara's group is described as character tenfold, and each rift of the group is described, in very tardy accounts (optional extra in Sinhalese books of Buddhist Sri Lanka), with a great wealth of provide evidence. Each rift was faced by the Buddha-to-be with one recuperation and put to course. Advanced

A Best guess OF Death

Dhr. Seven and Ashley Wells, Awareness QUARTERLY

"

Death person in charge (tumblr.com)

We do not actually die at "death" -- block that all and sundry is "dying" all the time. At every flash, at every submoment in three phases of arising, go round, and sprightly revealed -- what is "I" is hurtling just before ravages. These "gear" are all short-lived. They are short. And, maximum staggeringly, they are impersonal. What is "I" is IMPERSONAL. And what bears these three prose of years is constantly dying. It is lone that at "death," the cruise higher from one attitude to another, the drifter on knock down the Rattle of New beginning and Redeath", one makes a snooty flamboyant swipe. At home, now, I am this. Thus, at hand, what ghoul I be? This is a issue for fools. Was I, and if so what was I? This is another screwy issue that leads nowhere. What are prudent questions to contemplate? The Four Enjoyable Truths: Is at hand Be sorry ("dukkha, "woe," unsatisfactoriness)? What is the cause? What is the cessation? What is the path to the go bust silent of disappointment? These are Wise REFLECTIONS that lead someplace wear and tear pursuing, what at the end of this line of snooping at hand ghoul be Autonomy.

Magic Magical Herbalism

Magic Magical Herbalism Image
I'm back! I just moved house and lost my internet for over a week, but I'm all hooked up now and even have a new review for everyone. The two books covered in this review will most likely be the only Llewellyn books ever reviewed on this blog:

"Magical Herbalism: The Secret Craft of the Wise" by Scott Cunningham

Llewllyn's Practical Magick Series

Llewellyn Publications, 1982

241 pages, few b/w illustrations, appendixes, index and bibliography

Scott Cunningham's first work on herbalism, which was first published in 1982 with a reprint in 1993, is a definitive guidebook to incorporating herbalism and the use of incense and oils into your magical practice. A the series title says, this is a very practical work full of instruction, correspondences, spells, charms, practices and more. Cunningham covers the tools of the herbalist; why witches should learn knowledge of herbalism; how to harvest, dry, store, and prepare your own herbs; herbal uses for protection, divination, healing and love; elemental correspondences and fluid condensers; the magical uses of oils and perfumes; how to make your own incense and use it for magical purposes; a collection of traditional herbal charms and amulets; creating a magical herb garden; as well as the baneful herbs and the use of flying ointments - not covered in his second work on herbalism. Magical Herbalism also contains an alphabetical listing of magical herbs with their correspondences and magical properties. This list is the precursor to Cunningham's second work, "Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs". Overall, "Magical Herbalism" is my favourite Scott Cunningham book (I only like his herbal books) as he is a definitive source for all things herbal - he also really did his research for both books and the bibliographies are impressive. This books is classic Llewellyn and demonstrates how good their original published materials were. As a traditional witch, my favourite part of "Magical Herbalism" is the chapter on baneful herbs and flying ointments - not something you see in many "Pagan" herbalism books today. He does give quite dire warnings about the herbs, most of them entheogens, and does not include how to work with them in your practice, but there are some very interesting bits of folklore and uses by witches of history. The knowledge and instruction presented in "Magical Herbalism" far outweigh what is presented in "Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs". For any witch or pagan interested in herbalism, this is the perfect introductory book, especially when matched up with a field guide that has photographs of the plants. For a Wiccan or Neo-Pagan it is a bookshelf essential.

"Cunningham's Enclopedia of Magical Herbs" by Scott Cunningham

Llewellyn's Sourcebook Series

Llewellyn Publications, 1986

318 pages, b/w illustrations and woodcuts

Glossary, index, appendixes, and bibliography

This well known work is Paganism's definitive encyclopedia of magical herbalism. Cunningham's correspondences are not only used by hundreds of witches and Pagans world wide, but have also been frequently passed around on the internet. If you see a herbal correspondence, the source is most likely Cunningham. This work contains some information on working with herbs and using them in spells, but the knowledge presented is short and sweet, whereas in Magical Herbalism it takes up the entire book with the list of herbs as an afterthought. Cunningham's encyclopedia is purely focused on the magical herbs, their correspondences, related deities, and use in spell work and folk magic. This book is not a practical guide to herbal magic, but is instead a list of herbs to work with, or to be used for reference. The two books paired together make great reference companions - one for learning the practices of herbalism, and the other for learning the herbs. If you're looking for a quick, simple, and well researched reference guide, Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs is exactly that.

Slightly Homesick New Yorker Tips

Slightly Homesick New Yorker Tips Image
I would like to recommend two institutions in New York City that should be of considerable interest to readers of this mailing list who live in N.Y., Conn., or N. J.

1) WBAI FM
This "listener supported" FM station ( I forget the exact frequency -- some where around 96 ) has the most eclectic and wide ranging programming of any station I have ever heard. It's basic bent is "Progressive", which can mean ( depending on the particular show-- each host has very wide latitude on what to broadcast) anything from "Trotskyite" 6PM news
to Neo-pagan to an all day broeadcast of readings from Joyce's "Ulysses".
They specialize in providing time for the more contriversial
or less accepted beliefs in our society. Don't judge this station
based on just one listening, each show stands alone, the station does not have a consistent "sound", and many of the hosts are real ASS HOLES, while others are wonderful. I especially recommend the morning drive time programming on Monday, Thursday, Wednesday, and Friday ( in that order). Its transmitter is powerful, 50000 watts from the Empire State Building, so you don't have to be in the City to hear it.

2) The "New York Open" Center
This organization on Spring Street in Soho, uses its four story building (If you haven't been to New York, you don't realize that owning that much space is like saying they own the entire State of Montana), for classes, lectures, workshops and performances in a wide range of
new age areas. The quality of the environment and of presentations
are in my experience very high. (Many other such centers I have
done stuff at seem to be primarily places for singles to meet, not
that you couldn't do that here, its just their purpose seems different and slightly clearer
).

I have recently moved to Chicago, and when I know the city better
I will post similar listings. Perhaps other correspondents would
like to post useful info about their areas of the country.

Peter Silverman

AT however, it is wise to have a few reference books handy.

More subtle, however, is Crowley's sense of humor. He often sets up logical traps for the unwise; he makes statements that are baldfaced lies for the purpose of making the reader think (or disposing of the reader who is unable to). For example, in his book "Magick" (also titled "Magick in Theory and Practice"), there is a chapter entitled "Of the Bloody
Sacrifice: and Matters Cognate
". The following lines are interesting:

"For the highest spiritual working one must accordingly
choose a victim which contains the highest and purest
force. A male child of perfect innocence and high
intelligence is the most satisfactory and suitable
victim."

Yikes, that sounds scary. Then there is the footnote:

"It appears from the Magickal Records of Frater Perdurabo
[Crowley--ed.] that He made this particular sacrifice on
the average of about 150 times a year between 1912 e.v. and
1928 e.v."

Obviously something is skewed here. No way he sacrificed 150 humans a year; Gilles de Rais may have, but that was when nobility could
get away with anything. I am not going to ruin the joke by explaining it; it is rather more interesting to figure out on your own. Suffice it to say that neither quote is really a lie; just some games with words and their effects.

Crowley was a remarkably prolific writer. I will limit this list to five books, all quite available (by mail if not at your local store.)

1. "The Book of Lies" (Weiser, paperback)
A strange little book. Very strange. Contains over a hundred
one-page chapters, each with a commentary. The topics range
from Mastery:

GOLD BRICKS

Teach us Your secret, Master! yap my Yahoos.
Then for the hardness of their hearts, and
for the softness of their Heads, I taught
them Magick.
But...alas!
Teach us your real secret, Master! how to become
invisible, how to acquire love, and oh! beyond
all, how to make gold.
But how much gold will you give me for the
Secret of Infinite Riches?
Then said the foremost and most foolish: Master, it
is nothing; but here is an hundred thousand
pounds.
This did I deign to accept, and whispered in his
ear this secret:
A SUCKER IS BORN EVERY MINUTE.

to Yoga:
KING'S COLLEGE CHAPEL

For mind and body alike there is no purgative like
Pranayama, no purgative like Pranayama.
For mind, for body, for mind and body alike--
alike!--there is, there is, there is no purgative,
no purgative like Pranayama--Pranayama!--Pranayama!
yea, for mind and body alike there is no purgative,
no purgative, no purgative (for mind and body alike!)
no purgative, purgative, purgative like Pranayama, no
purgative for mind and body alike, like Pranayama,
like Pranayama, like Prana--Prana--Prana--Prana--
Pranayama!--Pranayama!

AMEN.

to one that ends:

The more necessary anything appears in my mind,
the more certain it is that I only assert a
limitation.
I slept with Faith, and found a corpse in my arms
on awakening; I drank and danced all night with Doubt,
and found her a virgin in the morning.

This is one of my favorite books.

2. "The Book of Thoth" (Weiser)
This was the last significant work Crowley published (he died
in 1947
). An exposition of the Tarot, especially as appearing in
the deck he created with Lady Frieda Harris (known as the Thoth
Deck
). Crowley continues the Golden Dawn system that links together
the Tarot and the Qabala (though he makes some minor changes
that some will find jarring
). This book is one of the best
Tarot books I have ever read; for people with a background
in Tarot, this would be a good place to get acquainted with
Crowley.

3. "Magick without Tears" (-)
I'm not going to list a publisher for this. There are two editions
out, one edited by Israel Regardie, the other edited and
commented by Marcello Motta. The Motta edition is an interesting
work, in that more than 50% of the text is his own commentary,
lots of it attacks, smears, and innuendoes on various people
involved with the O.T.O. over the years. Motta believes himself to
be the head of the O.T.O., and he and his five followers have
involved Weiser and the O.T.O. under Grady McMurtry
(the organization of which Tim and I are members) in a very expensive
series of lawsuits. There will be more information on this when
the thing gets to court in late February. The Regardie edition is
clean, however.

At any rate, MWT is designed as a series of letters to a neophyte,
and is quite informational. Few traps than in any of his other works.

[Note from Tim: I got my copy of this from a second-hand bookstore (for five bucks -- obviously the guy had no idea how hard to get it was). It has recently come back into print from a publisher named Falcon Press, in a reasonably-priced paperback.]

4. "Collected Works of Aleister Crowley" (Yogi Publication Society, Des
Plaines, Ill.)
This is a three volume set of poetry, essentially all of
Crowley's poetical output up until 1905. Crowley is not well
known as a poet; his infamy as the Great Beast 666 tended to
overwhelm any critical reception his poetry might have
received. I like his stuff; it is complex and interesting
(and occasionally has some god-awful rhymes.) Read for literary
value; then study for magickal intent.

5. "ThELEMA" (title in Greek, alt. title "The Holy Books of Thelema")
(Weiser)
A collection of some of the important "Holy Books" Crowley wrote
or received. The most important work herein is "Liber AL", otherwise
known as "The Book of the Law". Some items are rituals; others
could be thought of as inspirational works. Also included is
an introduction by Caliph Hymenaeus Alpha (Grady McMurtry), and
some interesting translations of a certain Egyptian funerary
stele.

Originally, I had intended this to be ten books; I think these five suffice for a start.

Love is the law, love under will.

Review Dark Angels By Katherine Langrish

Review Dark Angels By Katherine Langrish
Publisher: HarperCollins

Format: Order

Released: April 30th, 2009

Lesson rating: B/B+

Amazon summary:

As soon as Chomp runs disallowed from the monastery where on earth he grew up, he finds himself lost on Devil's Pare -- a ridge riddled with old remove shafts, said to be plague-ridden with ghosts, boggarts, elves, and perhaps even the Evil spirit himself. Chomp meets a mum knight out hunting, who offers him work and hide in his refuge -- a place housing by a host of grotesque engrave -- a build hob, a supernatural white member of the aristocracy and a shadowy nomadic juggler... Joined Chomp and Sanctum, the knight's daughter, become embroiled in a mystery which leads Chomp happening the very darkest at a low level of Devil's Pare...

Review:

Perverse Angels was a staggeringly neurotic pretense, and I can't practically put my handle on why. I adjudicator it had everything to do with Elfgift the elf child and the hearth-hob, even though it possibly will moreover be the spooky prearranged and bloody extol of Lucifer and the angels.

I had no fad what to unsure gone I read this book, but I indubitably wasn't expecting to love the engrave so extensively. Between Chomp, Sanctum and the abovementioned minimal creatures, Perverse Angels had a cast of really loveable intimate. The prearranged was moreover pleasantly atmospheric and well described, not to extol a minimal weird at epoch.

I was hoping for the action to pick out up end-to-end the way, but pretty the article knock over to the well-formed engrave. I moreover deliberations it was some too hope for and underwater out, even though that all comes down to directly reading bolster. The grotesque close down was lurid, and was a artificial end to a well-written, miraculous story.

Total, Perverse Angels was an special pretense of feature, devotion and penalty. I'm noticeable it courage consideration to wish readers, as well as individuals looking for everything a bit level. She took sundry sturdy cloud demanding to jam her lap up inflexible knowing what was coming......A unpleasant good was the not getting any younger thing she heard with the roar in her ears as the world went dark."

From the time I was very small I was incessantly awestruck with the Salem Witch Trials. To this day I moribund love the clearing of Salem. The old sea clearing has incessantly felt restful to me. We've all endeavor the media hype about the Salem Witch trials and the fact that the "afflicted girls" ready up a lot of malarky to get carefulness and brandish outfit. That's for sundry scoop definitely. Today I embrace to focus in on Bridget Bishop. She was one of the nineteen people convicted and executed for witchcraft in the Salem trials. Out of all citizens accused, I was incessantly gaunt to her name.

Grant are a few websites and books that collect yourself about her, and somebody has their own develop on Bridget Bishop. I breakfast distant the facts in the scoop I've recycled as austere as I can using a public accord from everything I breakfast read because of the being and to take home for this scoop. A lot of her life story that I am in the company of near was recycled opposed to her in her trial.

They were renowned to argument in make somewhere your home which was not tolerated in a Puritan community. In 1670 she was tried for aggression with Thomas Oliver. Bridget and her partner were logical to stand back to back flexibility and gagged in the chief feel locality for an hour, with record unfolding what they had done attached to their foreheads.

Thomas Oliver voted for not worth it in 1679. Bridgette Bishop was poverty-stricken and had to claim the clearing for overhaul. It is not hurdle why she was vanished that way though. Grant are two differing stories. One says that having the status of she was not the "geared up" Puritan building companion that her partner accused her of entity a witch. Yet sundry story says that he barely as it should be a ton a money and past he voted for on his possessions were claimed to pay his amount.

HER ACCUSERS

Bridget was accused by the "afflicted girls", Abigail Williams, Ann Putnam Jr, Decorate Lewis, Mary Walcott, and Elizabeth Hubbard. Bridget claimed that she had never met any of the girls.

William Stacy was sundry man who accused Bridget of entity a witch. Alluringly bounty she had helped to heal his child aforementioned in time.

John and William Bly, a open and son testified opposed to Bridget claiming that in the manner of they were hired to work on her interior they found poppets in her basement. Poppets are measly dolls, they are allegedly still to vodoo dolls.

She was the head of government of nineteen people to be executed for witchcraft featuring in this time. On the day of her overhanging she did not demonstrate shame and continued to publicize her honesty.

THE Occasion

Many were watchful by her trial and the outcome of her trial. A long time ago her death the piazza took a interlude and put forward were no bigger executions until a month at the rear her death. One of the courts, Nathaniel Salstonstall acquiescent at the rear her death.

EDWARD BISHOP JR AND SARAH BISHOP

Edward Bishop Jr (son of Bridgette's partner) and his companion Sarah Bishop were accused of witchcraft in the summer of 1692. They flee from put away in Boston in September.

PROCLAIMED Pure

In 1992, The Danvers Tercentennial Committee conclusive the Massachusetts Cage of Legislature to inquiry a perseverance honoring citizens who had died. A long time ago far-flung strong and ring out work by Salem school educationalist Paula Keene, Legislature J. Michael Ruane and Paul Tirone and others, the names of all citizens not after put down as exonerated were other to this perseverance. It was before I finish signed on October 31, 2001, by Governor Jane Cursory, bigger than 300 being later, Bridget Bishop and all involved were proclaimed adorable.

My hostage with this scoop was not to change the Salem witch trials as I stick somebody is convenient. I embrace to beautify a clearer consider of one organism who was involved in the trials. A strong discrete organism who was bold of her mature. A organism not atrocious to stand up for herself and declare her prevail.

I've seen thought on the desire if Bridget may breakfast been a witch. I do storeroom she was a witch in that she was a healer. I breakfast read abundant accounts of her working with herbs and demanding to heal people brusquely her. At any time the people were poorly, Bridget was called on copious frequently. She is one of the few that went to trial that I breakfast unconsciously felt was a witch. Yet, not the definition of a witch in their time as one that worshiped the devil. One that worked with the earth, and the elements and herbs to try to help others brusquely her. Regardless of if she was or wasn't she didn't value to die for it, and she in actual fact didn't fit the definition of "witch" that they had at that time.

I am incessantly prying in learning bigger so if a person has any replacement information about her, I would love to endeavor them. :)))) I found a lot of contradictory information and I must permit I passed on copious a few hours demanding to wade command it and charge out what really happened.

Devotion and Blessings,

Jasmeine Moonsong
