In ziua de 22 octombrie sunt comemorati Sfantul Ierarh, intocmai cu apostolii, Averchie, Sfintii 7 tineri din Efes, Sfanta Maria Salome, si Fericitul Ioan Paul al II-lea, Papa.

SFANTUL IERARH, INTOCMAI CU APOSTOLII, AVERCHIE
Sfantul Averchie a fost episcop la Hierapolis din Frigia, in Asia Mica, in vremea imparatului prigonitor al crestinilor Marcus Aurelius. In timpul unei sarbatori pagane, Sfantul Averchie a fost invatat de un inger sa rastoarne la pamant statuile zeului Apollo si ale celorlalti idoli pagani. Atunci cand aceasta fapta a fost descoperita, locuitorii pagani ai orasului si-au iesit din fire. In loc insa sa se ascunda, Sfantul Averchie a venit in piata publica si si-a declarat fara teama credinta crestina. Idolatrii s-au infuriat si mai tare, insa, dupa ce Sfantul Averchie a vindecat trei oameni posedati de duhuri rele, au ramas cu inmarmuriti de uimire si au inceput sa asculte cu o sporita atentie ce avea de zis. El a propavaduit dreapta credinta cu o asemenea putere de convingere incat toti oamenii din oras si altii din imprejurimi au devenit crestini.
Aceste minuni au ajuns la urechile imparatului, a carei fiica era stapanita de demoni. Chemat de Marcus Aurelius la Roma, Sfantul Averchie a reusit sa alunge diavolii din trupul fetei imparatului si a savarsit inca cateva alte miracole. Imparatul i-a oferit o pony recompensa in aur, insa sfantul nu a vrut sa o accepte. Pe drumul spre casa, o viziune divina i-a indrumat pasii catre Siria. Cei sapte tineri din Efes, Maximilian, Exacustodian, Iamvlih, Martinian, Dionisie, Ioan si Constantin, au aspect in secolul al treilea. Sfantul Maximilian a fost fiul administratorului cetatii Efes, iar ceilalti sase proveneau din ilustre familii din acelasi oras. Fericitul Ioan Paul al II-lea a mers la cea dintai Sfanta Comuniune la varsta de noua ani si a fost confirmat la optsprezece ani. Dupa ce a absolvit scoala Marcin Wadowita din Wadowice, s-a inscris la Universitatea Jagielloniana din Cracovia si la o scoala de teatru in anul 1938.
Fortele de ocupatie naziste au inchis universitatea in 1939, iar tanarul Karol a trebuit sa munceasca intr-o cariera (1940-1944) si apoi in fabrica de produse chimice de la Solvey, pentru a-si castiga existenta si a nu fi deportat in Germania.
In anul 1942, constient de chemarea sa catre preotie, a urmat niste cursuri covert la Cracovia, conduse de cardinalul Adam Stefan Sapieha, arhiepiscop de Cracovia. In acelasi timp, Karol Wojtyla a fost unul dintre cei dintai actori ai "Teatrului rapsodic", de asemeni clandestin.
